Grinnell drops STC
GRINNELL — The South Tama football team traveled to Grinnell last Friday night to face the Tigers in a District 5 matchup. Grinnell came into the game with a record of 4-1 and having recently dropped out of the Class 3A Top 10 rankings.
The defensive units for both teams came out strong to start the game. The Trojans held Grinnell to a 3-and-out on the Tigers’ first possession. However, on their second possession, Grinnell put together a 32-yard drive capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run. In the second quarter, Grinnell racked up three more touchdowns to extend the lead to 28-0 at the half.
STC found success on the ground in the second half. The Trojans put together an 80-yard touchdown drive, which featured strong running by senior Tyrus Clegg and sophomore Eric Medina. The drive was finished by Medina, who scored on a 7-yard touchdown run. However, Grinnell added two second half touchdowns and a field goal to put the final score at 45-7 in favor of the Tigers.
For the game, Medina rushed 14 times for a game-high 65 yards. He was followed by senior quarterback Cody Blocker who ran 9 times for 29 yards. Blocker was also 5/9 in passing attempts. On defense, the Trojans were led by junior Garrett Surman who racked up 10 total tackles. He was followed by sophomore Kyle Youngbear and Medina who totaled 8 tackles each.
South Tama (0-6) plays next on Friday, Oct. 11, at Fairfield (1-5). The Varsity game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
