Trojans earn fall sports honors
As the 2024 fall sports season came to an end, several South Tama Trojan athletes were honored for their performances.
In cross country, STC junior Barrett Jesina earned all-conference honors by finishing in seventh place at the WaMaC conference meet. In addition, Jesina went on to qualify for the State Cross Country meet and finished in twenty-fourth place in the Class 3A race in Fort Dodge. Jesina also earned WaMaC all-academic team honors. Two female Trojan runners also earned all-academic recognition: senior Jenny Manzo and junior Nazaret Carrillo. The entire cross country team was honored at their team banquet on Sunday, November 10th. Many team awards were given out, including Jesina and junior Jovanie Perez being named team captains.
On the volleyball court, Trojan senior Janette Cervantes was named to the first-team of the WaMaC all-conference team. Cervantes led the Trojans in aces for the season with 53. She also was second in kills (132), second in digs (170), and third in blocks (25). Sophomore Paisley Bro earned a place on the all-conference second team. Bro ranked high in several statistical categories for the Trojans, including first in kills (184), fourth in digs (121), and fifth in blocks (17). Earning honorable mention from the WaMaC conference were seniors Macy Welsh and Cailey Brown. Welsh, Brown, and Cervantes served as team captains for the season. Five Trojans earned academic all-conference honors. These included: Cervantes, Welsh, senior Maddy Wiese, senior Hannah Houghton, and junior Madeline Paxton. At the season-end banquet for the team, several special awards were given out that the varsity players voted on. Some of these recipients included: Cervantes (Team MVP), Bro (Offensive MVP), and senior Skyla Beck (Defensive MVP; led the team with 375 assists).
The STC football team earned several honors in class 3A District 5. Recognized by the coaches on the district’s first-team included: senior Cody Blocker and senior Tyrus Clegg. Blocker played both quarterback and running back for the Trojans and led the team in passing yards and rushing yards for the season. Clegg excelled on special teams, leading all of District 5 in kickoff return yardage. Recognized on the district’s second team were junior Tanner Large, sophomore Kyle Youngbear, and sophomore Eric Medina. All-District honorable mention recognition went to junior Nick Upah and junior Marcus Bear. The academic All-District team included three Trojans: Blocker, Upah, and junior Garrett Surman. The football team celebrated their 2024 season at the team banquet on Sunday, November 10. Among the many awards given out that night, junior Drew Mellies was recognized with the top award for a lineman, and Blocker was honored with the coach’s Trojan Award. Blocker, Upah, and senior Anthony Thompson served as season captains.
