Trojans fall to 13th-ranked CP-U
Fresh off of the program’s first victory in two years, the STC girls basketball team hoped to keep the momentum going on Tuesday, Dec. 10. A night after beating the Union Knights, the Trojans hosted the Center Point-Urbana Stormin’ Pointers, who came in with a #13 ranking in Class 3A.
The Pointers began the game by pressuring the Trojans with a full-court press and forced 11 STC turnovers in the first quarter alone. Combined with hitting four 3-pointers, CPU ran out to an 18-4 advantage at the end of the opening quarter.
The Trojans continued to struggle in the second quarter, scoring only a single free throw. CPU took a commanding 38-5 lead into the halftime break.
The Pointers continued to frustrate the Trojans in the third quarter, as STC was held scoreless. CPU freshman Adelyn Stien scored 7 of her game high 15 points in the third quarter alone, and the Pointers extended their lead to 56-5. But the Trojans kept fighting till the end, and finished the game with scores from freshman Dyan Keahna, freshman Cahysia Kapayou, and junior Daelia Lasley. In the end, the Pointers were too much and they pulled away to a 75-13 win.
The Trojans were led in scoring by Keahna with a total of 5 points. Kapayou, Lasley, sophomore Olivia Hala, and senior Janette Cervantes added 2 points each. STC was led in rebounding by Cervantes and junior Rylee Ridout with 3 each.
STC (1-5) travels to Vinton-Shellsburg on Friday night, Dec. 20, for their last game before the holiday break. They return after the break on Monday, Jan. 6, for a home contest against East Marshall.
