STC girls wrestling sweeps CCA, Ames
The STC girls swept Creek Amana and Ames during the annual ‘Pin the Gym Night’ on Thursday, Dec. 19. On a night when seniors were recognized, the Trojans gave another convincing performance.
The evening began with a matchup against the CCA Clippers. A pair of sophomores started the domination, as Keylee Holloway (125 lbs.) and Brooklyn Mitchell (130 lbs.) both pinned their opponents in the first period of their matches. The Trojans also gained other victories by fall, including sophomore Paisley Bro (145 lbs.) and freshman Jayva Gomez (105 lbs.). At 155-pounds, Abigail Chyma stepped to the mat on the night she was honored as a senior. In a hard fought match that went the distance, Chyma earned a 15-8 major decision. With several other wins by forfeit, the Trojans won a shutout victory against the Clippers, 81-0.
In the second dual of the night, STC faced the Ames Little Cyclones. The competition began with Ames taking the first two matches and jumping out to a 12-0 lead. But the Trojans quickly tied the score at 12 after Bro (145 lbs.) pinned her second opponent of the night and Chyma gained a victory by forfeit. After that, it was all Trojans. Junior Autumn Elsbury (170 lbs.) took a mere 16 seconds to pin Ames’ Julia Hard. This was followed by more pins by sophomore Ioleta Kingbird (190 lbs.), Gomez (105 lbs.), junior Ava Hendricks (115 lbs.), Holloway (125 lbs.), and Mitchell (130 lbs.). In one of the matches of the night, sophomore London Jaennette (120 lbs.) fell behind Ames’ Zoe Mytides 7-5 midway through the second period. But Jaennette fought back and pinned Mytides with eight seconds before the second period ended. When the dual was completed, STC walked away with another commanding victory, 66-18.
Up next for the girls wrestling team, after the holiday break, is a trip to the BGM Invite on Jan. 4.
