Girls wrestling takes crown at Prairie
CEDAR RAPIDS — The South Tama girls wrestling team took first place in a loaded 26-team field on Saturday, Dec. 21 at the John Randles Wrestling Invite at Cedar Rapids Prairie High School.
Leading the way for the Trojans was junior Autumn Elsbury (170 lbs.), who secured the only first-place finish in her class for STC. After receiving a bye in her opening round, Elsbury went on to pin all 3 of her remaining opponents en route to the championship. For the title, Elsbury defeated Western Dubuque’s Ava Pfab.
The Trojans also finished with three second-place finishes–all from sophomores. Livia Smith (100 lbs.), Brooklyn Mitchell (130 lbs.), and Paisley Bro (145 lbs.) all battled their way to the championship match and finished as runner-up in their class.
A pair of Trojans finished third on the platform, including senior Abigail Chyma (155 lbs.) who pinned Lilly Ness of Williamsburg to get the bronze. She was joined by sophomore Kinley Jimenez (235 lbs.), who took third by pinning Payge Steger of Western Dubuque.
Also finding their way to the awards podium (top 6 places) for the Trojans were: junior Ava Henricks (6th place, 115 lbs.), sophomore Keylee Holloway (4th place, 125 lbs.), sophomore Ava Perkins (6th place, 135 lbs.), freshman Maylee Rucker (6th place, 140 lbs.), and sophomore Ioleta Kingbird (5th place, 190 lbs.)
In addition, the Trojans received team points on their championship run from junior Taylor Johannsen (110 lbs.) and sophomore London Jaennette (120 lbs.). Also competing at 105-pounds for the Trojans was freshman Jayva Gomez.
As a team, the Trojans won with a total of 207 points. Second place Linn-Mar finished with 186 points. The nearest fellow-WAMAC school to the Trojans was Williamsburg, who finished in seventh place with 102 points.
With the win, it is the third team title for the Trojans midway through the season. They won previously at the Newton Invite on Dec. 7 and the Williamsburg Invite on Dec. 9.
