OGDEN — The South Tama girls wrestling team took third place on Saturday, Jan. 11, when they traveled to Ogden for the annual Ogden Invite. Recently ranked #7 in Class 2A, the Trojans finished behind only Osage and Ankeny in the team standings.

STC’s lone individual champion was junior Autumn Elsbury (170 lbs.), who cruised through all three of her matches. Elsbury won by fall over all three, including Humboldt’s Danica Diedrick, to take the 170-pound championship.

The Trojans also ended up with six top-five finishes for the day. Leading the way was sophomore Ioleta Kingbird, who finished runner-up in the 190-pound weight class. STC also had two third-place finishes from sophomore Brooklyn Mitchell (130 lbs.) and freshman Maylee Rucker (140). Senior Abigail Chyma finished fourth in the 155-pound class. Chyma’s march to the podium included one of the most thrilling matches of the day. Finding herself down 11-3 in the second period, Chyma quickly reversed her fortunes and pinned Manson Northwest Webster’s Lucy Kohnen for the win. Rounding out the top-five finishers were two sophomores who both finished 5th: Keylee Holloway (125 lbs.) and Kinley Jimenez (235 lbs.).

Also competing and helping the Trojans to their 3rd place team finish were: Livia Smith (100 lbs.), Jayva Gomez (105 lbs.), Taylor Johannsen (110 lbs.), Ava Hendricks (115 lbs.), London Jaennette (120 lbs.), and Ava Perkins (135).

The girl wrestlers travel to East Buchanan High School for the East Buchanan Invite on Saturday, Jan. 18. This will be followed by their WaMaC Conference meet on Jan. 24 at Mount Vernon High School.
