STC winter sports year in review

With the close of the boys basketball State Tournament last weekend, the winter sports season has officially come to an end across the state of Iowa. Several STC athletes were awarded for their performance in the winter sports of 2024-2025.

In girls basketball, freshman guard Dyan Keahna led the way by being recognized on the second team of the WAMAC West All-Conference selections. According to the statistics recorded on ‘Bound’, Keahna led the Trojans in scoring with 172 points on the season, averaging 7.8 points a game. She was also fourth on the team in rebounds, fifth in assists, second in steals, and second in 3-point field goals made. The Trojans were also honored with two selections to the WAMAC West All-Conference honorable mention list: senior Janette Cervantes and junior Rylee Ridout. Ridout led the Trojans in rebounds (130), was third in assists, and fourth in scoring. Cervantes led the Trojans in steals on the season (37), and was third in rebounding.

In boys basketball, STC was recognized with two players earning WAMAC West All-Conference honorable mention. Those two players were the Trojan backcourt of juniors Cyrell Etzen and Tanner Large. Etzen had a highly successful campaign for STC, leading the team in both scoring (186) and rebounding (127). He was also first in steals, second in assists, and tied for first in 3-point field goals made. Large also found himself near the top of many statistical categories. He was second in scoring (148), first in assists, third in steals, and tied for first with Etzen in 3-point field goals made. Junior guard Barrett Jesina earned all-academic recognition by the WAMAC conference.

On the wrestling mat, the Trojans boys’ team continued their history of success. With his second place finish at the conference wrestling meet, senior Romiro Saquic earned a spot on the WAMAC All-Conference second team at 113-pounds. Junior Marcus Bear finished third at the conference meet in the 170-pound weight class and also earned a spot on the WAMAC All-Conference team. Two Trojans were recognized with all-academic recognition by the WAMAC conference: senior Cody Blocker and junior Garrett Surman. At their team banquet on Tuesday, March 4, several additional awards were handed out by the coaching staff. Among the recipients were: Bear (‘Most Valuable Wrestler’), Saquic (‘Toughness award’), sophomore Manny Cervantes (‘Most Improved’), freshman Lakyr Peska (‘Instant Impact award’), senior Kinzer Jaennette (‘Leadership award’), senior Wyatt Silhanek (‘Teammate award’), and junior Carver Cecak (‘JV All-Star award’).

For the girls’ wrestling team, it was a highly successful winter campaign. Reaching a team-ranking as high as #7 in class 2A, the Trojans qualified five athletes in the State Wrestling Tournament. Junior Autumn Elsbury went on to win a state championship at 170 pounds. After the season, three athletes were selected to the WAMAC All-Conference first team: Elsbury, sophomore Ava Perkins (135 lbs.), and sophomore Paisley Bro (145 lbs.). Two more Trojans were selected to the WAMAC second-team: freshman Jayva Gomez (105 lbs.) and sophomore Brooklyn Mitchell (130 lbs.). In addition, two girls from STC were honored with WAMAC All-Conference honorable mention: senior Abigail Chyma (155 lbs.) and junior Ava Hendricks (115 lbs.). Chyma, Elsbury, Hendricks, and junior Taylor Johannsen were honored by the WAMAC conference on the all-academic team. At their end-of-the-year banquet, four wrestlers were named as captains for the team’s outstanding season: Elsbury, Chyma, Hendricks, and Johannsen.
